A New York Times dispatch to The Globe reports that recently, Mr. Trump asked House Republicans for their opinion on firing Powell and shared a draft letter to do so. Asked on Wednesday whether he intended to fire Mr. Powell, Mr. Trump said he had no immediate plans for a removal, though he refused to rule it out. If he took such a step, it is unclear whether he would succeed. Mr. Powell has indicated his intention to serve out his term as chair, and many legal experts say the law is on his side. Even if Mr. Trump ousts Mr. Powell, the move might be counterproductive. A new chair could persuade other Fed officials to lower short-term interest rates. However, long-term rates, especially on 10-year and 30-year government bonds, are more significant for borrowers, as they impact mortgages and loans. While the Fed influences these rates, it is investors who set them through bond trading. Firing the Fed chair could send them soaring, economists warn.
