The Financial Post reports in its Friday, Aug. 7, edition that investors are contemplating whether to revive last year's "Sell America" trade following recent economic policy decisions from Washington. A Bloomberg dispatch to the Post reports that first, Federal Reserve chair Kevin Warsh's preference for sparse communication cast doubt on the central bank's commitment to fighting inflation. Next, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent approved U.S. support to help Japan stabilize the yen. Although the intervention was conducted through the euro to prevent disrupting the Treasury market, it may still pressure the U.S. dollar. Bloomberg says investors are starting to reassess their taste for U.S. bonds and the greenback amid concern that Washington's policy is again becoming hard to decipher. The 30-year Treasury yield has risen above 5 per cent to its highest since 2007 although it has retraced some of its move since the Fed meeting. The U.S. dollar has weakened against almost every Group-of-10 currency over the past month despite higher U.S. yields, which would normally support it. Gamma Asset's Rajeev De Mello says, "Bessent and Warsh are a double whammy to global markets that investors can't ignore."
