The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that Alberta Premier Danielle Smith -- a former newspaper columnist and Corus Entertainment talk-show host -- likened journalism to entertainment in remarks she made over the weekend. The Globe's Marsha Lederman writes that Ms. Smith's full-on display of ignorance of the media is no laughing matter. Her ignorance on other matters was exposed when she said in all seriousness that unvaccinated Canadians were the most discriminated group she had witnessed in her lifetime. Ms. Smith has depicted journalism as a click-bait endeavour. Ms. Lederman calls that a dismissal of a fundamental aspect of democracy, one that Ms. Smith should be intimately familiar with. It might be self serving for Ms. Smith to call journalism simply entertainment, but it is more than that. Journalism serves the public. Journalism can expose what the establishment wants swept under the rug. Journalism asks uncomfortable questions. There are too many cities across North America experiencing firsthand the lack of accountability that results from a death of the local newspaper. Ms. Smith should know that, or maybe she does. Maybe she is just trying to get some click-bait action herself.
