The National Post reports in its Saturday, June 22, edition that an Ontario Superior Court judge has found no documented evidence to support allegations made against former Liberal MP Han Dong in a series of Global News reports last year. A Canadian Press dispatch to the Post reports that the judge made the comments as he rejected an application from Global parent Corus Entertainment to throw out Mr. Dong's lawsuit. Justice Paul Perell said in his judgment Wednesday, "The matter of Mr. Dong's communications with the Chinese are worthy of the freedom of expression of an open court system." The Global report cited unidentified sources early last year and suggested that Mr. Dong privately advised a senior Chinese diplomat to hold off on freeing Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig. As a consequence of the story, Mr. Dong's reputation and life in politics were destroyed, Justice Perell said in his judgment. Mr. Dong has denied the allegations against him, and filed a lawsuit against Global and several journalists just weeks after the story ran. Wednesday's ruling spelled out concerns about the lack of documentation behind the news report. Justice Perell ordered Corus to reimburse Mr. Dong for his legal fees.
