The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Aug. 15, edition that Corus Entertainment, which is facing financial distress, has accused Rogers Communications of using its dominant position in the industry to unfairly disadvantage Corus and other independent media companies. The Globe's Alexandra Posadzki writes that this accusation was made in a complaint filed with Canada's broadcasting regulator. In the filing submitted on July 26, Corus claims that Rogers has not adhered to the conditions set by the regulator when it approved Rogers's $20-billion acquisition of Shaw's broadcasting services. Corus is controlled by the Shaw family, which sold Shaw Communications to Rogers in 2023. The Shaw family holds a class of Corus shares that gives them about 86 per cent of the voting control over the company. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission imposed several conditions when it approved the sale in 2022, aiming to promote the development of Canadian programming. The commission emphasized its expectation for Rogers to treat independent undertakings fairly and stated that it would monitor the telecom and media giant's relationships with independent programmers.
