The National Post reports in its Tuesday edition that President Donald Trump announced a five-day postponement of strikes against Iran's energy infrastructure, following "productive conversations" with the country. A Bloomberg dispatch to the Post reports that Mr. Trump noted "major points of agreement" and mentioned that special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner engaged in talks with a "top person" from Iran, with both sides eager to negotiate further. Mr. Trump suggested the United States and Iran could jointly control the Strait of Hormuz, which has been essentially closed since the start of hostilities, roiling global energy markets. Mr. Trump said the strait could be open very soon "if it works." Brent crude plunged from $112 (U.S.) a barrel to as low as about $96 (U.S.) a barrel as Mr. Trump signalled negotiations were underway even as Iran denied the talks. Mr. Trump said a "top person" is representing Iran in the discussions but that the individual was not Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. Axios reported Monday that Mr. Witkoff was negotiating with Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, the Iranian Parliament's Speaker. However, Mr. Ghalibaf said in a post on X that no negotiations have been held with the U.S.
