The National Post reports in its Wednesday edition that the Carney government has been mulling an oil pipeline from Alberta to the B.C. coast for a year. The Post's Tristin Hopper writes that Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed his support for on May 13, 2025, saying he has expressed his support repeatedly. Despite having the power to green-light the project, he announced he intends to approve construction by September, 2027. According to a subsequent report by CIBC World Markets, the "best case scenario" is that the project might be moving oil by 2034. A West Coast pipeline has been in development for over 20 years. Enbridge began signing contracts for the Northern Gateway pipeline in 2006, but the project was cancelled in 2016. Canada may finally start operations on a West Coast oil export pipeline over 28 years after it was first proposed. This slow progress is unique among major oil producers, as Canada struggles with internal red tape and the movement of its oil across borders. Canada's main challenge in approving pipelines is jurisdictional conflict. Building a pipeline across provincial borders often leads to legal disputes and opposition from neighboring provinces and numerous first nations along the route.
