Globe says CNRL a consistent dividend payer

2026-08-19 07:45 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, Aug. 19, edition that Middlefield manager Rob Lauzon recommends buying Canadian Natural Resources for its dividend. The Globe's Shirley Won writes that Calgary-based Canadian Natural Resources has raised its dividend for 31 consecutive years. That is through multiple commodity cycles and even when the oil price collapsed in 2020 during the pandemic lockdown, Mr. Lauzon says. The energy producer has been able to do so because of its long-life, low-decline resource base, in addition to having a quality management team, he adds. Oil will likely trade around $70 (U.S.) a barrel for longer, which is positive for Canadian Natural Resources, but the company is still profitable with oil at $50 (U.S.) a barrel, Mr. Lauzon notes. He says once its net debt is down to $13-billion (Canadian), which could happen by year-end, it will return all its free cash flow back to shareholders by buying back stock or increasing its dividend, he adds. The stock trades at about 6.5 times cash flow, which is about a 10-per-cent premium to its peers, "but we think it is warranted," Mr. Lauzon says. The risk is sharply falling oil and gas prices..
