The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that partners in the Shell-led LNG Canada project will announce a $30-billion expansion on Tuesday that will double the facility's capacity at Kitimat, B.C., to 30 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas per year. The Globe's Jeffrey Jones writes that the project is expected to attract $33-billion in private investment to Canada. The partners had said a few months back that a decision was forthcoming before the end of the year. Canada is increasing energy shipments to global markets to reduce its reliance on the United States. Shell owns the largest stake in LNG Canada at 40 per cent, followed by Malaysia's state-owned Petronas (25 per cent), Japan-based Mitsubishi (15 per cent), PetroChina (15 per cent) and South Korea's Kogas (5 per cent). Last September, U.S.-based MidOcean Energy acquired a 20-per-cent interest in key Petronas assets in Canada, including natural gas operations in northeast B.C. and the Petronas stake in LNG Canada. Earlier this year, LNG Canada agreed to take the lead role in developing plans for an expansion of the Coastal GasLink pipeline, which transports natural gas from northeast B.C. to Kitimat.
