Globe says Cenovus's White Rose still on track for 2026

2024-11-01 08:10 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Nov. 1, edition that Cenovus Energy has completed work on a floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel for the West White Rose oil field expansion off Newfoundland and Labrador, with first oil expected in 2026. The Globe's Emma Graney writes that the SeaRose FPSO is returning from Belfast, where it completed dry dock work, marking a "major milestone," according to Cenovus chief executive officer Jon McKenzie. Production from the White Rose field, located 350 kilometres east of St. John's, is expected to resume by year-end. Currently producing about 26,000 barrels a day, its output is declining due to falling oil reserves. The extension project aims to boost production by 75,000 barrels a day and extend the field's life to 2038. Cenovus's expansion project costs $700-million to $800-million annually, but is expected to generate over $1-billion a year once operational. It is currently 85-per-cent complete, which TD Securities analyst Menno Hulshof finds "reassuring." Mr. McKenzie noted that the narrower differential between Canadian and U.S. oil prices has strengthened prices for all Canadian production.
