The Financial Post reports in its Friday edition that the news that Donald Trump might impose a 25-per-cent tariff on Canadian goods has alarmed the Canadian economy, especially the oil sector. The Post's Meghan Potkins writes that concerns are rising that a trade war could disrupt commodity flows, especially in energy exports, in response to Mr. Trump's intentions. Cenovus Energy has warned against such tariffs or retaliations. Cenovus's Reg Curran says, "Any trade barriers that might be imposed on this free flow of trade could have a serious negative impact on both sides of the border." He adds, "A reduction in Canadian exports will inevitably lead to reduced revenues for industry and governments, and it will also increase the price American families and consumers pay for finished products, such as gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel and asphalt -- of which Cenovus is a leading producer." The American Petroleum Institute is urging the new administration to exclude crude oil, natural gas and related products from tariffs, stating that they are essential for U.S. energy security. The interconnectedness of the two countries in energy may lead to Mr. Trump exempting crude oil and natural gas from tariffs against Canada.
