The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that Alberta Premier Danielle Smith attended Wednesday's meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other premiers virtually, skipping the news conference and refusing to sign a joint statement. The Globe's guest columnist Duane Bratt writes that Ms. Smith's absence means Alberta is missing from the collective strategy against U.S. president-elect Donald Trump's threatened 25-per-cent tariff, which is disappointing and will not shield the province from the impact of his attacks. Ms. Smith is opposing retaliatory actions Canada could use to respond to Mr. Trump's tariff threat. Given the severe impact a 25-per-cent U.S. tariff would have on Canada, the country must explore all options. Energy exports (oil, natural gas, electricity) are its most effective tool, yet Ms. Smith opposes any talk of an energy embargo or export tax. Other energy-exporting provinces have not made the same ultimatums. In a fight between Canada and the U.S., Ms. Smith appears to be taking the side of Mr. Trump. She has been planning to counter Canada's retaliation but not Mr. Trump's tariff. Ms. Smith shares Mr. Trump's views on climate change, COVID-19, transgender rights and gun ownership.
