The Financial Post reports in its Saturday, Jan. 25, edition that President Donald Trump's threats of steep tariffs on Canada and other friendly nations have contributed to poor performance in Toronto's oil and gas stocks. A Bloomberg dispatch to the Post reports that while the energy sector in the U.S. is thriving, with the S&P 500 Index up 8.6 per cent, Canada's S&P/TSX Composite Energy Index has only risen nearly 4 per cent. Following Mr. Trump's tariff announcement targeting Feb. 1, Canadian Natural Resources saw a decline of up to 5.5 per cent, marking its worst day since October. Additionally, Keyera is the worst-performing stock in the MSCI World Energy Index this year, with several other Toronto-listed companies, including Cenovus Energy and Tourmaline Oil, also underperforming. Last week, after Mr. Trump reportedly warned Alberta Premier Danielle Smith about potential tariffs on Canadian oil, U.S. energy stocks outperformed Canadian ones by 6.3 per cent, the highest since November, 2020. Some analysts warn that Toronto-listed oil producers, including Veren, could drop by up to 12 per cent if Mr. Trump imposes a 25-per-cent tariff on Canadian oil for a year, say TD Cowen analysts.
