The National Post reports in its Friday edition that Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has issued a warning to Prime Minister Mark Carney's new government, pledging to strengthen a provincial law that protects oil and gas infrastructure from damage or obstruction. The Post's Rahim Mohamed writes that during a press conference on Wednesday, Ms. Smith announced that amendments to Alberta's Critical Infrastructure Defence Act would create a protective barrier around the province's energy sector by designating oil and gas production sites and facilities that house emissions data and records as essential infrastructure. Ms. Smith emphasized that these changes are necessary to safeguard Alberta's energy security and economic interests from outside interference. And that includes interference from Ottawa, she stated, clarifying the target of the new provisions. In November, Ms. Smith had previously declared that greenhouse gas emissions data would become the exclusive property of the provincial government. At that time, she expressed frustration, stating that she felt blindsided by the Liberal government's imposition of an oil and gas emissions cap, which she described as part of a "deranged vendetta" against Alberta.
