The Globe's Gary Mason writes that many believed she was attempting to secure a personal deal for Alberta oil and gas tariff exemptions, rather than following the expected "Team Canada" approach from national leaders. Ms. Smith dubiously claimed her approach to the President represented the entire country, not just her province, suggesting she was unaware of the political ties of those she was assisting back home. Mr. Mason suggests that Ms. Smith appears to be asking a foreign government to influence an election in favour of the party and federal leader she supports. Her press secretary called suggestions of asking the U.S. to interfere in Canada's election "offensive and false." Ms.Smith recently met with Mark Carney in Edmonton and presented him with a long list of demands. She warned that if her demands are not met, she will trigger an "unprecedented national unity crisis." Her demands include unrestricted pipeline construction and lifting emissions caps on the oil and gas sector.
