The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, April 25, edition that National Bank Financial analysts have reaffirmed their optimistic perspective on the long-term opportunities for investors in Canada's energy sector. The Globe's David Leeder writes that the analysts also recognized that short-term volatility is likely to continue, describing recent news as feeling like "a never-ending tilt-a-whirl." The National analysts say in a note: "This volatility offers an entry point to gain exposure to energy equities, which were recently nearing cyclic-highs. Over the last month, our coverage is down an average of 11 per cent, with forward strip multiples reflecting valuations similar to the 2017-2019 range, respecting that historically, the best energy opportunities are through the choppy waters of weakening commodity cycles around geopolitics. Although WTI prices fell by as much as $10 (U.S.)/bbl in early April, our revised assumptions embed a view that oil prices will, in time, recover toward that $70 (U.S.)/bbl range as fundamentals normalize." The analysts continue to rate Cenovus Energy "sector perform." The National analysts cut their share target to $23 from $25. Analysts on average target the shares at $26.27.
