The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, May 13, edition that Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced an immediate freeze of the industrial carbon price at $95 per tonne of emissions, crucial for maintaining industry competitiveness amid a tariff dispute with the U.S. A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe reports that Ms. Smith emphasized the need for a reasonable carbon pricing system to protect jobs. The price was previously set to increase to $110 per tonne in 2026 and $170 per tonne by 2030. Alberta has had a carbon tax scheme since 2007, using collected funds for emissions-reduction grants and innovation projects. Environment Minister Rebecca Schulz noted that industry warned against prices exceeding $100 per tonne. She said, "[It] is not a common sense approach at a time like this, where the threats from outside our borders are so great, and the world is looking for Canadian energy right now." Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers president Lisa Baiton said she supports Alberta's freeze, and called on the federal government to fully reset its carbon regulatory scheme. Pathways Alliance president Kendall Dilling says Canada's carbon pricing system disadvantages local industries in global competition.
