The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, June 3, edition that Alberta Premier Danielle Smith attended the first ministers' meeting advocating for an oil pipeline to Northern B.C. The Globe's Campbell Clark writes that some Eastern Canadian premiers expressed interest in a west-to-east pipeline. Neither project currently has a proposed builder, and they serve different purposes: one focuses on economic diversification, while the other aims to enhance Canada's energy security, particularly in light of trade tensions sparked by U.S. President Donald Trump. After the meeting in Saskatoon with Prime Minister Mark Carney, no clear conclusions were reached regarding the pipeline routes. Mr. Carney, however, indicated he would support a pipeline that delivers "de-carbonized" barrels -- and hinted that a pipeline could go ahead if the Pathways Alliance project for carbon capture also advances. Ms. Smith called that a "grand bargain." The PM certainly made it sound like he sees that pipeline going to the West Coast. Mr. Carney said: "The opportunity is there. The market is there, in Asia." That suggests the PM favours a pipeline to the Pacific over one across the country. That is what Ms. Smith wants.
