The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, June 3, edition that three major oil sands producers in Northern Alberta have evacuated workers due to wildfires. The Globe's Emma Graney writes that Canadian Natural Resources evacuated staff from its Jackfish 1 operation, halting 36,500 barrels a day of bitumen production, ensuring all workers are safe. MEG Energy also evacuated non-essential personnel from its Christina Lake regional project facility due to a nearby wildfire.
A fire knocked out power lines connecting the site to Alberta's electric grid. Christina Lake, about 160 kilometres south of Fort McMurray, continues oil production with its cogeneration capabilities. However, MEG stated that the power outage has delayed the start-up of its next operational phase. MEG is collaborating with its third-party power provider to restore grid connection and return to full capacity. Last week, Cenovus Energy restricted workers at its Christina Lake oil sands site to essential personnel, and halted about 238,000 barrels a day of production. Cenovus said Sunday it had inspected the site and is not aware of any damage to its infrastructure. It anticipates a full restart of Christina Lake operations in the near future.
