The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that wildfires in Alberta have disrupted over 344,000 b/d of oil sands production, prompting evacuations at two operators near Fort McMurray. An unbylined item in The Globe reports that despite this, Canada's S&P/TSX Composite Index rose 213.91 points to a record high of 26,388.96, boosted by rising gold prices and an increase in energy stocks. Oil prices also climbed nearly 3 per cent, even as OPEC+ maintained output plans. The materials group gained 4.3 per cent alongside higher gold prices. Shares of oil producers Cenovus Energy, Canadian Natural Resources and MEG Energy rose between 1.2 per cent and 2.5 per cent. U.S. stocks also closed higher, boosted by technology stocks. Investors were still optimistic over trade talks between the United States and its trading partners despite President Donald Trump's latest salvo to double tariffs on imported steel and aluminum. Edward Jones analyst Angelo Kourkafas said: "We're seeing some continuation of last week's positive momentum. ... The technology results provide some confidence that despite some of the geopolitical uncertainties and trade uncertainties, the foundation for the bull market remains intact."
