The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, May 21, edition that Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to negotiate with British Columbia Premier David Eby on the province's economic priorities, emphasizing that talks about a contentious new pipeline cannot continue indefinitely. The Globe's Jesse Winter writes that the two leaders met privately in Vancouver after Mr. Carney addressed business leaders, highlighting plans for expanding critical minerals mining and liquid natural gas projects in B.C. The PM addressed the new pipeline proposal from Alberta's oil sands to B.C.'s North Coast, which has raised concerns among environmentalists and some indigenous leaders. An agreement between Ottawa and Alberta last week could allow construction to start next year, despite no agreed route or private proponent. While Ottawa will "adjust to what people want," on the pipeline and other projects, Mr. Carney said his government doesn't "want to hear what people are against, we want to hear what they're for." Mr. Carney said, "If things get stalled [in B.C.], we're going to be spending more time elsewhere in the country because we need to move forward."
