The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that the federal government is set to sign an agreement with British Columbia next week, alongside Alberta's proposal for a West Coast pipeline. The Globe's Emma Graney and Marieke Walsh write that two government sources say Alberta must finalize a deal on the Pathways carbon capture project simultaneously with its crude oil pipeline proposal. The pipeline has been a priority for Alberta, as it has been for Ottawa as it moves to diversify the economy away from the United States. Oil sands companies initially favouring Pathways, however, have since soured on it mainly due to costs. One source says Ottawa is open to further backstopping the multibillion-dollar project with pre-existing funds. The source says nothing has been finalized and industry is still at the table with the two governments as they near a July 1 deadline set by Alberta. B.C. Premier David Eby has, of late, softened his opposition to a West Coast pipeline. The Prime Minister's press secretary, Sofia Ouslis, says Ottawa's pending deal with B.C. will "accelerate the delivery of critical infrastructure and major projects in clean electricity and energy, critical minerals, and secure supply chains."
