The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that senior federal cabinet ministers appearing before the Assembly of First Nations' annual meeting Thursday said consultation with first nations is a key piece of the government's major projects policy agenda. The Globe's Ian Bailey writes that the commitment came as the assembly's delegates and leadership expressed doubts, throughout the three-day meeting in Ottawa, about whether Prime Minister Mark Carney's government is sincere in its pledges to meaningfully engage with first nations ahead of the development of major projects. Energy Minister Tim Hodgson said the government wants direct participation from first nations as major developments move ahead. "I come here with a simple message: There is no good way to build major projects without first nations' partnership and leadership. Full stop," Mr. Hodgson told the assembly's hundreds of delegates. Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc said Ottawa also pitched the government's promises to "uphold the rights of indigenous people ... as our laws require," After the ministers' speeches, some delegates expressed doubts and skepticism about their promises, and took to microphones on the meeting's floor.
