The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that Ottawa will invest $7-million in the Malmbjerg project, a mining project in Greenland by Toronto-based Greenland Resources. The Globe's Adam Radwanski writes that this funding will support the extraction of the critical mineral molybdenum for the defence and aerospace sectors, and assess the recovery of additional minerals for various manufacturing industries. The pledge was part of a spate of new expenditures and partnerships announced by Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson at the annual Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada mining conference, under a G7 critical minerals alliance initiated by Canada last year. Other new commitments by Ottawa include $2.3-million for Frontier Lithium's processing facility in Ontario, $16.7-million for First Phosphate's demonstration and feasibility project in Quebec, and $15-million for U.S. social-enterprise company Regeneration's metal extraction and site restoration project in British Columbia. The Greenland pledge may attract notice in light of the geopolitical dynamics. Ottawa has expressed interest in building a closer relationship with Greenland, recently establishing a Canadian consulate there.
