The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, Sept. 21, edition that investigations into a series of shootings in Toronto are hindered because a key cell phone seized in the case runs on a privacy-focused operating system, preventing investigators from unlocking it. The Globe's Joe Friesen and Robyn Doolittle write that the police think the cell phone may hold key communications and data linked to those behind the shootings, including an attack on the United States consulate. In June, police launched a series of raids in response to the attack, as well as others on synagogues and local businesses, including GFL Environmental, in Toronto. The phone operates on a little-known and highly secure operating system called GrapheneOS, reputed to be one of the most difficult to penetrate in the world. GrapheneOS is available for users to download and install for free and is based on the Android Open Source Project, which allows developers to modify elements of the basic Android framework. GrapheneOS was created by Toronto programmer Daniel Micay. The police believe the shootings targeting buildings and businesses are carried out by a loose network of mercenary gunmen hired through encrypted messages.
