The Financial Post reports in its Friday edition that Canada may lose its early edge in artificial intelligence due to slow adoption by businesses, says Geoffrey Hinton, the "godfather of AI." The Post's Yvonne Lau writes that at a Toronto Tech Week event, Mr. Hinton said Canada has been slow to embrace AI and educate employees, posing a sizable challenge. Mr. Hinton praised Ottawa's value in funding AI research but emphasized the challenge Canada faces in remaining competitive due to the large investments by the U.S. and China. "If you could somehow get the leaders of the big companies in Canada to be less conservative and say, 'Look, there's a revolution coming,'" he said, it would help maintain our advantage. Mr. Hinton argued that the "only counter-pressure" to Big Tech firms lobbying governments for watered-down AI regulations is going to come from the public. Cohere co-founder Nick Frosst expressed optimism about AI in Canada, stating: "Canadian businesses have been slow to adopt AI, but I see that changing. We invented this technology, so Canada should lead in it. We need to keep developing it." He said AI's potential to transform industry and society means that countries need to "build robust social systems."
