The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that stock splits may not be as frequent as they once were, but they still happen. The Globe's John Heinzl writes that in recent years, there has actually been a resurgence, particularly among U.S. tech companies whose stock prices have surged. Last year alone, several high-profile companies split their shares, including Nvidia (10-for-one split), Walmart (three-for-one), Chipotle Mexican Grill (50-for-one) and Canadian Natural Resources (two-for-one). They joined Amazon, Shopify, Apple, Alphabet and others that had split their shares in the preceding few years. That said, it is true many companies that might have been expected to split their shares by now are instead letting their stock prices run. Companies often announce stock splits to increase liquidity and lower share prices, making them more affordable for retail investors. This practice dates back to when investments were typically made in multiples of 100 shares, and high prices could limit access for some investors. A stock split was a simple solution, but the industry has evolved. Modern trading systems allow investors to buy shares in any quantity, reducing the need for companies to split their stock.
