The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday edition that technology evangelists promised that artificial intelligence would simplify recruiting, but it has failed to do so. A Globe editorial says many job seekers use AI chatbots like ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot to add keywords that match job descriptions to their resumes and cover letters. Hiring managers receive thousands of applications daily, many written with AI, making it difficult to differentiate candidates. Overwhelmed, many turn to AI software to help sort through the applications. It is a dystopian arms race where employers mandate first-round interviews with AI avatars, while job seekers use chatbots for clever responses. North Korean IT workers created AI deepfakes to impersonate Americans and secure tech jobs with U.S. companies. This dehumanizing process of bot vs. bot has left both sides feeling frustrated. AI promised an easy way to match the right hires and employers, but in reality, the result is often endless searching, ghosting and rejection. While AI can automate some tasks, managers should stick with traditional interviews to screen candidates. Increasingly, managers are preferring to meet applicants in person to prevent candidates from using AI.
