The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, June 5, edition that Prime Minister Mark Carney's artificial intelligence strategy emphasizes that Canada is lagging in a technology crucial for boosting productivity and economic growth. The Globe's Campbell Clark writes that Canada's strategy includes an ambitious industrial policy to build a leading public supercomputer, create data centres, fund AI companies, expand subsidies for AI computing costs for small businesses, and support literacy programs, student jobs and research. Mr. Carney unveiled AI tools at a hospital to showcase their potential in saving lives. The PM views AI as an unstoppable economic revolution, while many Canadians prefer a slower approach. "There is a massive gap between where the government is going and where Canadians are," said Angus Reid Institute president Shachi Kurl. The institute's recent poll of 1,803 Canadians conducted from May 7 to 11 revealed that 68 per cent favour heavy regulation of AI, even if it slows adoption. Additionally, 45 per cent believe AI will significantly reduce job availability. The PM has obviously decided there is an imperative that must be pursued and the government's job is to change the public's mind.
