The Financial Post reports in its Wednesday, Aug. 12, edition that International Business Machines sold $2.75-billion of Canadian corporate bonds Monday, building on a record year of issuance in the currency by foreign firms. A Bloomberg dispatch to the Post reports that sales of so-called Maple notes by non-Canadian firms have set an all-time high this year, with offerings from the likes of tech giants Amazon and Alphabet helping to reshape Canada's corporate-debt market. For IBM, it marks the company's first such issue in 14 years. The longer eight-year tranche of IBM's deal priced 1.2 percentage points above benchmark, slightly tighter than initial discussions. Proceeds will go toward general corporate purposes. IBM, whose latest United States dollar-bond sale occurred in January, has struggled this year amid weak sales for its computer infrastructure and related software. A focus by the firm on software has fueled concerns from some investors that the company could be disrupted by artificial intelligence. Its shares are down 20 per cent this year, the third-worst performance in the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
