The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that critical security vulnerabilities in a widely used programming language caused many global government websites to go dark on Wednesday. The Globe's Alexandra Posadzki writes that Canada's cybersecurity agency head warns more flaws will likely emerge as artificial intelligence advances. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security has instructed organizations to immediately make updates addressing serious flaws in PHP, an open-source programming language used to run websites, adding applications that can't immediately be fixed should be temporarily taken offline. The vulnerabilities were discovered by security researchers using AI technology, according to Microsoft-backed OpenAI and security company Wiz. They can allow hackers to run unauthorized software on unpatched Web servers. Agency head Rajiv Gupta says: "As we get into AI, the idea is that we're going to see more and more of these vulnerabilities becoming public. And that's why people are going to have to be more resilient in terms of how they patch and how they manage risk." The discovery of flaws marks the latest development in the ongoing arms race between attackers and defenders exploiting AI's capabilities.
