An Associated Press dispatch to The Globe reports that U.S. Central Command said that U.S. forces intercepted "unprovoked Iranian attacks" and responded with self-defence strikes. The U.S. military said no ships were hit. It said it does not seek escalation but "remains positioned and ready to protect American forces." A shipping data company reported that Iran has created a government agency to vet and tax vessels seeking passage through the strait. Iran's attempt to control the channel has raised concerns over international shipping, with many vessels stranded in the Persian Gulf. However, hopes for a quick resolution to the two-month conflict have lifted international markets. On Thursday, Tehran said it was examining the latest U.S. proposals for ending the war but "has not yet reached a conclusion, and no response has been given to the U.S. side." Saudi Arabia said Thursday it will not support President Donald Trump's effort to reopen the strait by force.
