The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday edition that President Donald Trump seems to want to control everything -- from telling Coca-Cola how to make Coke and guiding the Fed's monetary policy to overseeing university curricula and anti-antisemitism rules. The Post's William Watson writes that Mr. Trump decides which industries to repatriate, sets tariff rates on a whim and proposes new borders for Ukraine. He envisions turning Gaza into a resort, suggests Intel fire its chief for being too close to China and benefits from Nvidia and AMD chip sales to China. Additionally, he muses about New York's mayor and takes charge of the District of Columbia. Mr. Trump apparently feels that if something is in the news, he has a stake in it. Mr. Trump is even telling the banks how to operate. A new study suggests, however, that a little less presidential energy and a lot more forbearance might be better for the U.S. economy. A study out of the University of Chicago's Harris School of Public Policy found democracies actually produce a growth premium. It found autocracies dominated by strong personalities do less well than democracies. The study found "personalist" dictators often make decisions with limited information.
