The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that Lithium Chile is fighting Ottawa's decision to review a planned $175-million (U.S.) sale of an Argentinian project to a Chinese company. The Globe's Andrew Willis writes that Lithium Chile revealed that the Industry Ministry had served notice that it would review the proposed sale of an Argentina-based unit, Argentum Lithium, to China Union Holdings, based in Shenzhen. The deal was announced the deal eight months ago. The federal government launched the review over national security concerns. Lithium Chile chief executive officer Steve Cochrane said the decision's "consequences extend beyond Lithium Chile, creating uncertainty for shareholders and transaction counterparties and undermining confidence in the predictability of Canada's capital markets." Lithium Chile and China Union remain committed to the deal and are negotiating with the government. Mr. Cochrane said the companies' position is that the sale falls outside the Canadian government's jurisdiction. He said the timing of the Industry Ministry's notice "raises serious concerns regarding regulatory certainty, procedural fairness and the ability of shareholders to rely on a transparent regulatory process."
