The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that the rise of automation and robotics in Canadian workplaces has the potential to improve the standard of living for Canadian workers, but only if companies and labour unions can reach common ground during negotiations. The Globe's Rita Trichur writes that various sectors such as manufacturing, natural resources, telecommunications and retail are increasingly integrating robotics and automation into their operations. It is projected that technological advancements could automate between one-third and one-half of all tasks currently performed by employees by the year 2033, according to Unifor, Canada's largest private-sector union. Ordense Robotics chief executive officer Soren Kristensen says: "The robots are not taking jobs. They are supporting jobs." Many Canadian companies and unions agree that a lack of communication with workers can be a problem when introducing robotics and automation. Magna International's Todd Deaville emphasizes the importance of engaging with workers early on, rather than showing up on the plant floor without any communication. Instead of piecemeal initiatives, Ms. Trichur says Canada needs a national strategy on robotics and automation.
