The Financial Post reports in its Thursday, Jan. 22, edition that the lack of information about Prime Minister Mark Carney's new partnership with China has left Canada's auto sector confused and bracing for the worst. The Post's Gabriel Friedman writes that the Prime Minister's Office has said it will allow China to send 49,000 electric vehicles into Canada at a 6.1-per-cent duty instead of the current 106.1 per cent. But the lack of industry consultation beforehand and details, including who decides what vehicle brands and models can enter Canada at the reduced rate, are fuelling suspicion among carmakers that the policy will create new uncertainty at a time when automakers are already reeling from United States tariffs. "The larger reality is we don't know anything about it," said Global Automakers of Canada's David Adams. "This announcement just throws a wrench in the gears." Canadian Automotive Parts Manufacturers' Association president Flavio Volpe said, "We have to make our investments and protect them before we take on the Chinese, who don't have profit as a key metric." The 49,000 number is less than 3 per cent of the 1.9 million new vehicles sold per year, but represents at least 25 per cent of total EV sales.
