The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that Canada and the United States failed to reach an agreement late Friday to avert punishing new tariffs on Canadian exports. A triple-bylined item led by Adrian Morrow says that new 50-per-cent levies will hit $28-billion worth of Canadian goods, which is roughly 5 per cent of Canada's exports to the U.S.. Ottawa said it will respond with retaliatory tariffs on $28-billion worth of U.S. products. In a statement late Friday night, Prime Minister Mark Carney said that "last-minute changes in the U.S. proposed terms were unfair, uneconomic and called into question the reliability of any deal." The two sides were trying to reach a compromise where Canada would concede to a number of U.S. trade demands in return for lower sectoral tariffs on steel, aluminum, cars and lumber, as well as no new tariffs. In return, Canada would have removed retaliatory tariffs on U.S. cars, allowed more American cheese to enter the country and asked the provinces to restock U.S. alcohol and end procurement restrictions. U.S. Representative Jamieson Greer put the blame on Canada for the failure to reach a deal, claiming "significant tariff reductions on steel, aluminum, autos and lumber."
