The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that several of the country's technology companies have released upbeat quarterly financial results this month, but disappointing guidance for the year ahead has hammered share prices. The Globe's David Berman writes that shares in Open Text, for example, plummeted 14.8 per cent on May 3, even though the company reported results that were in line with analysts' expectations and underscored a thriving business. On the flip side, companies that have matched strong quarterly performance with a sunnier outlook have rewarded investors with rallies. Lightspeed Commerce on Thursday gained 18.3 per cent after the payments player reported revenue rose 25 per cent during the quarter. It said it would deliver adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) of at least $40-million (U.S.) over the coming year, up from $1.3-million (U.S.) during its just-completed fiscal year, as the company refocuses its attention on profitability. If this looks like a Wild West of stock-market activity, it is. With tech stocks soaring -- or tumbling -- by double-digits in a single day of trading, the sector is looking like the domain of confused investors.
