The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, Jan. 1, edition that TikTok does not pay Canadian creators. The Globe's Samantha Edwards writes that some Canadian influencers have launched new accounts in the United States to access TikTok's Creator Rewards Program, which pays based on engagement. The global content creator industry is a $24-billion ecosystem of influencers who monetize their followings through brand partnerships and various revenue streams. In Canada, however, policies from social media companies and the government hinder creators' ability to earn money. Many of the country's "macro" influencers feel they need to leave to advance to the next level. In November, Ottawa ordered TikTok to stop its Canadian operations due to national-security risks linked to its parent company. Ottawa's Bill C-11, the Online Streaming Act, aims to require big tech companies like Alphabet's YouTube and platforms like Netflix and Disney+ to promote Canadian content. Critics argue it may hinder Canadian creators if the CRTC decides their content is not Canadian enough.
The Online News Act forced Google and social media platforms to negotiate with news organizations, leading Meta to block news links on Instagram and Facebook.
