The National Post reports in its Saturday, July 5, edition that for years, an Ottawa military unit has run a private Facebook account, the Blue Hackle Mafia, where soldiers post inappropriate images and make antisemitic, misogynistic, homophobic and racist comments. A Postmedia dispatch to the Post reports that the Canadian Army began investigating this group, consisting of soldiers from the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa, in December. The page, active for at least 14 years with about 200 participants, features male soldiers in uniform exposing themselves, posing naked with weapons and engaging in sexual acts. Posts also include derogatory remarks about former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and discussions targeting Jews and Muslims.
Postmedia provided screenshots of some of the postings to Canadian Army commander Lt.-Gen. Michael Wright on June 24, after which he confirmed that an investigation had already been started into the social media group. He said, "I can share that I am disgusted by the content of some of the posts published on this group." He added, "I have ordered that any serving Canadian Army members currently on this social media group immediately cease their participation."
