The National Post reports in its Wednesday edition that Canada's army commander was unaware of antisemitic, misogynistic and racist comments on Meta's Facebook site run by his soldiers. The Post's David Pugliese writes that soldiers from the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa have been operating a Facebook group called the Blue Hackle Mafia, posting inappropriate photos of themselves in uniform and making derogatory comments about women, former prime minister Justin Trudeau and discussions about violence against marginalized groups. In December, military police received complaints about the Blue Hackle Mafia group, confirmed by the Canadian Forces. Complaints regarding a private Facebook site and its content were raised with Lt. Col. Ryan Hendy, commander of the Cameron Highlanders and 33 Brigade Commander Col. James Mckay. The inappropriate content on the Facebook account was also reported to officials in the Judge Advocate General's office.
Army commander Lt. Gen. Michael Wright knew nothing about the controversy surrounding the high-profile reserve unit until he was briefed about the situation on June 25, the day after the Ottawa Citizen sent images from the Facebook group to DND and asked him for comment.
