The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that Meta said starting Dec. 16, it will use user interactions with its generative artificial intelligence tools to personalize content and ads on Facebook and Instagram. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that users will be notified from Oct. 7, but will not have the option to opt out; this applies only to those using Meta AI. Meta will use users' interactions with its AI features, along with existing data like likes and follows, to enhance content and ad recommendations, including Reels. For example, a user talking about hiking with Meta AI could later be shown hiking groups, friends' trail updates or ads for boots. Meta privacy manager Christy Harris said: "People's interactions simply are going to be another piece of the input that will inform the personalization of feeds and ads. We're still in the process of building the first offerings that will make use of this data." When people have conversations with Meta AI about more sensitive topics such as their religious views, sexual orientation, political views, health, racial or ethnic origin, Meta will not use those topics to show them ads, it said. The rollout begins in most regions on Dec. 16.
