The Financial Post reports in its Saturday, Nov. 15, edition that Apple has faced criticism from Wall Street for not investing as heavily in artificial intelligence as its Big Tech rivals, but this strategy is now benefiting the iPhone maker. A Bloomberg dispatch to the Post reports that investors are scrutinizing the large sums spent by companies like OpenAI, Meta and Microsoft on AI, causing volatility in previously strong momentum plays. Consequently, Apple's position is being reassessed. Apple shares are seen as a potential safe haven in the tech industry, as they carry low capital expenditure risks and have substantial cash reserves, especially if the AI trade unwinds further. Zacks manager Brian Mulberry says: "The hedge is it's still a technology company, but not an AI company. There is this positive feel for Apple that they don't have to answer the big question that everybody else does, which is: What is the return on your invested capital in all of these other areas?" The thesis is simple, Apple will benefit by utilizing other companies' models to provide AI features to its customers, avoiding the heavy spending that its larger peers are undertaking to develop their own capabilities.
