The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that the federal government is set to invest significantly in a non-profit founded by Yoshua Bengio, a leading artificial intelligence researcher focused on safe and trustworthy AI systems. The Globe's Joe Castaldo writes that Federal AI Minister Evan Solomon announced that Ottawa has signed a letter of intent to financially support LawZero, founded by Mr. Bengio, to address significant risks from powerful AI models, including cybersecurity threats and their potential to deceive humans. A source says the amount under discussion is more than $100-million. Mr. Solomon declined to provide a figure for the investment but said it would be substantial. The amount would be significant for LawZero, a young company with around 30 employees. Ottawa has made only a few large investments to back AI outfits so far. Mr. Solomon highlighted Mr. Bengio's credentials as the most-cited computer scientist globally and framed the investment as part of the government's trust-building efforts in AI. Mr. Solomon said: "You have to have a regulatory strategy, a legislative strategy and a technical strategy. It's important to do multiple strategies because this technology is changing so fast."
