The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that without naming Anthropic or chief executive officer Dario Amodei, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg claims leading artificial-intelligence labs are trying to consolidate power while they painted the future as "filled with doom." A New York Times dispatch to The Globe reports that Mr. Zuckerberg wrote in a 6,500-word essay published this month, "If those labs lead, then the balance of power will favour larger institutions over individuals." The NYT notes that Mr. Zuckerberg publicly criticized Anthropic while his company privately aided its rise. Behind the scenes, Meta has become a heavy user of Anthropic's AI products -- so much so that it is now one of its largest customers. At one point this year, Meta internally projected that it could spend as much as $10-billion (U.S.) annually on Anthropic's AI models. That would have formed a major chunk of Anthropic's yearly revenue, which the start-up estimated in July would pass $65-billion (U.S.). Meta and Anthropic's relationship highlights the complex dynamics in Silicon Valley's AI race, where tech giants publicly criticize rivals while secretly investing billions, all while warning about the existential risks they pose.
