The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that Prime Minister Mark Carney's government is proposing a law to block imports made with forced labour, requiring shippers to prove their goods are free of coerced work. The Globe's Steven Chase writes that Bill C-35 allows the Foreign Affairs Minister to identify goods, producers or regions suspected of using forced labour. Customs officers would have the authority to stop shipments linked to these targets for up to 90 days. This bill comes after the U.S. threatened new tariffs on countries, including Canada, for not addressing forced labour imports. There is no proposed list yet. It would be drawn up after the legislation passes. Importers of the listed goods must provide proof to the Canada Border Services Agency that their products are free of forced labour; otherwise, the goods will be considered prohibited. Last week, the Whitehouse announced tariffs on 60 countries, including Canada, for not adequately addressing forced labour in their supply chains. This move aimed to restore parts of the tariff wall that the U.S. Supreme Court recently struck down. Notably, the tariffs will not apply to products compliant with the USMCA, covering most Canadian goods.
