The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that six months into Donald Trump's second term as President, it is increasingly clear that he is committed to protectionist trade policies. The Globe's Nojoud Al Mallees writes that Prime Minister Mark Carney now admits there is little evidence a trade deal without tariffs is possible. The prospect of a prolonged trade war is particularly devastating for businesses in the aluminum, steel and automotive sectors, which have been targeted by steep tariffs under national security grounds and have limited options to diversify away from the U.S., leaving their fate largely at the mercy of Mr. Trump. "I think it's been very clear that Trump is a tariff man," said Wolfgang Alschner at the University of Ottawa. "So, it would have been an unrealistic proposition that Canada can achieve a feat that no other country has thus far achieved, and that would be to convince the U.S. of not imposing any tariffs." His first-term tariffs were limited to economic rival China. This time, he has launched a global trade war that targets friends and foes alike. "He truly loves tariffs for a wide variety of reasons, but maybe the revenues above all else," said BMO chief economist Douglas Porter.
