The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc said Friday that talks with the Americans failed to reach a deal, which would have averted the imposition of 35-per-cent tariffs on some Canadian goods. The Globe's triple bylined item, led by Stephanie Levitz, writes that Mr. LeBlanc said he will be speaking to U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick next week. The two will meet again in person later in August. The failure to reach a deal underlines the challenge Prime Minister Mark Carney is facing in trying to forge a new trade and security relationship with the United States, as he promised to do during the spring election campaign. Talks have stalled even after Mr. Carney killed Canada's digital sales tax in June, aimed at foreign tech giants like Amazon and Alphabet's Google. The Prime Minister's Office could not confirm Friday whether Mr. Carney will reconsider Canada's 25-per-cent retaliatory tariffs on U.S. steel and aluminum imports. After Mr. Trump raised U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50 per cent, Mr. Carney refrained from matching them but pledged to adjust Canada's retaliatory tariffs based on progress in trade negotiations with the U.S.
