The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that Ontario Premier Doug Ford has warned that U.S. President Donald Trump may seek to renegotiate the North American free trade agreement earlier than planned, potentially harming Canada's economy. The Globe's Laura Stone and Stephanie Levitz write that following a virtual meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney and other premiers, Mr. Ford emphasized the need for Canada to prepare for these talks before the U.S.-Mexico-Canada-Agreement is set for renewal in the summer of 2026. He urged for increased domestic manufacturing to strengthen Canada's economy. The trade agreement has shielded most Canadian goods from Mr. Trump's punishing tariffs, which were increased to 35 per cent last week, although steel and aluminum have been further targeted by the U.S. with 50-per-cent tariffs, and the auto sector, 25 per cent. Mr. Trump is "coming at us hard" with full force, and we need to be ready, Mr. Ford stated. He believes Mr. Trump will not wait until next year to renegotiate the free trade agreement.
"He could pull the carpet out from underneath us on CUSMA tomorrow with one signature. So let's be prepared. I think it'll be coming in November, in my opinion," Mr. Ford said.
