The National Post reports in its Thursday edition that a growing number of Canadians consider the federal government's goal of achieving zero-emission vehicle sales by 2035 "unrealistic" and believe the mandate should be scrapped, according to a new Leger survey of 1,617 respondents. The Post's Stephanie Taylor writes that the survey highlighted the mandate's role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transportation as the Carney government faces industry pressure to abandon the policy. Currently, Ottawa plans to prohibit the sale of new gas-powered vehicles by 2035. "Which of the following viewpoints comes closest to yours?" the Leger survey asked. Leger says 71 per cent of respondents agreed with the statement that "the target is unrealistic and will cost too much. It should be rolled back." Another 29 per cent said they agreed with the position, "this target is necessary and should be kept in place despite the challenges it poses." The on-line survey was conducted between Aug. 1 and Aug. 4. Automakers cite declining sales and the trade war with U.S. President Donald Trump, particularly tariffs on the automotive sector, as reasons to consider the government's target unachievable and suggest shelving the policy.
